The Basement Cassettes is the follow-up to The Attic Reels, and shares its spirit. It's a collection of tracks that feel as though someone found a box of cassettes in their basement and pressed play, not quite sure what they were about to hear.
The album is an exploration of some interesting sequencers that can be found on iPad. For example "Mass" which is a physics-based sequencer that produces sequences from the movement of particles. Most of the tracks include some form of generated sequence which I then added other instrument parts to. This led to an interesting album that I didn't quite have full control over. I curated the sequences and then added to them, which took me to places that I might not have ventured to otherwise.
The tracks that emerged from this process, upon review, evoked memories of a particular basement. A place that was for many years a personal refuge. Somewhere to escape the summer heat, to lose hours to late night gaming sessions, to throw the occasional rock band party, to just exist quietly away from everything else. Some of these tracks carry that lightness. Others carry something heavier. Ivory Tempest, the closing piece, represents a more turbulent chapter, the kind that tends to leave its mark.
The Basement Cassettes doesn’t explain itself too carefully. Like the cassettes in the concept, it leaves a few things to the imagination of whoever finds it.
